AUGUST 2008

August
20 -- In response to the recent rainfall, Larimer County has removed the fire restrictions placed July 29th.

JULY 2008

July 21 -- The Crystal Lakes Volunteer Fire Department is pleased to announce the delivery of our new fire engine.  Our new structure truck, a 1988 4WD International with only 19,000 miles on it, carries 500 gallons of water, and has a pumping capacity of 1000 gallons per minute.  This vehiclewill be a much-needed asset to the department.  See pictures of our new structure truck.

July 29 -- Larimer County instated fire restrictions, which will remain in place until September 2. These restrictions ban open fires, except those in permanent metal or masonry pits, and fireworks; it permits the use of charcoal grills only on non-flammable surfaces and smoking only in areas of at least three feet which are cleared of all flammable material.

The fire pit specifications put in place by Crystal Lakes Road & Recreation Association comply with Larimer County requirements for a permanent metal or masonry pit. Therefore, Crystal Lakes property owners with approved fire pits may continue to legally have fires during these restrictions.

JUNE 2008

June 11 -- An Urgent Reminder: Please remember that your volunteer fire department is out working for your safety. Even though we are volunteers, the same traffic laws that apply to regular emergency vehicles apply to CLVFD fire engines and the vehicles of volunteers when their red lights are flashing. Colorado law requires that drivers slow down and pull to the side of the road for emergency vehicles. Please do not try to get ahead of us or go around us, Pull over as soon as there is room and be aware that where there is a volunteer's vehicle with red light flashing, there will be other emergency vehicles nearby that they are either controlling traffic for or waiting to lead to the scene of an emergency. In times of emergency, seconds can make the difference, so please help us and help your neighbors by staying out of the way when you see any vehicle with a flashing red lighty.

MARCH 2008

March 10 -- Department members voted to change all meeting and training dates to Thursdays, with the Administrative meeting on the first Thursday of the month, training the second and fourth Thursdays, and the Fire Board meeting on the third Thursday.

FEBRUARY 2008

February 9 -- Ice Rescue Training: Members of the Red Feather Lakes Volunteer Fire Department joined Crystal Lakes firefighters and auxiliary in learning the basics of ice rescue (both for those going onto the ice and those acting as shore support). We engaged in hands-on practice near the boat launch on Crystal Lake, using the equipment we purchased last year with donations from the community. Having gotten our feet wet, so to speak, we feel confident of our ability to respond to this kind of emergency, but sincerely hope it will never be necessary. Please be careful on the ice -- it's impossible to tell from its appearance how safe it is!

JANUARY 2008

January 1 -- The Crystal Lakes Volunteer Fire Department is pleased to announce the delivery of our new fire vehicle, purchased through a combination of savings and a low-interest loan. This marks the first time in the department's history that we have purchased a new fire vehicle.

and couldn't be more pleased. This 2007 Freightliner holds 2000 gallons of water and carries a 2000 gallon Portatank, which can be dropped at the scene and filled, freeing the tender up to go for more water. The tender is a four-wheel drive automatic with air brakes, and the Darley pump can move water at a rate of 750 gallons per minute, ensuring that firefighters will have a steady and reliable supply of water.

AUGUST 2007

August 1 -- Both Larimer County and the Crystal Lakes Road and Recreation Association have lifted their fire bans. Crystal Lakes is no longer under fire ban. Any person wishing to have a campfire must sign up for a free fire permit at the Association office.

JULY 2007

July 1 -- The Crystal Lakes area is currently under Fire Restrictions. This means that only property owners who have an approved fire pit meeting the new 2007 fire pit specifications will be permited to have fires. The Crystal Lakes Road and Recreation Association has taken this step due to the extremely hot and dry conditions prevailing in Crystal Lakes at this time. Please contact the Crystal Lakes Road and Recreation Association at (970) 881-2049 or crystal-lakes@crystal-lakes.org with any questions.

July 24 -- As of noon on July 24th, Larimer County instated fire restrictions which will last until September 4th. This partial fire ban applies to unincorporated areas of Larimer County, including the National Forests (and, of course, Crystal Lakes). Under these restrictions, open fires are prohibited, except in permanent pits (the specifications recently adopted by the Crystal Lakes Road and Recreation Association meet the county requirements for a permanent pit), as are fireworks and any smoking outside which is not done in a cleared area at least three feet in diameter. Click here to go to the Larimer County news release regarding these restrictions.

JUNE 2007

June 12 -- Crystal Lakes Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a training on the use of fire extinguishers this Friday, June 15th at 9:00 a.m. This training is free and open to the public. June 29 -- FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION!! This year's Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration will be held on Sunday, July 8th (the day after Red Feather's fireworks) at Basecamp. Food, games, fun giveaways for kids, a silent auction, and a raffle will begin at 10:00 am. The fire engine and ATV parade begins at 1:00, silent auction and raffles close at 1:30, and the festivities close at 2:00. Come and have a red, white and blue blast with your local fire department!

APRIL 2007

April 10 -- Crystal Lakes Volunteer Fire Department has scheduled a training on the use of fire extinguishers, which will be open to the public. This training will be on Friday, June 15th. Time to be announced.

-- The Rocky Mountain News reports that the fire danger this summer may be severe, despite the snow received in December and January. See this article from April 9, 2007 for more information.

FEBRUARY 2007

February 12 -- The CLVFD Fire Department has made the decision not to have the Fire Barn Sale this year. We will instead hold the sale next year. We appreciate all your support and assistance over the years and ask that you please hold any items to donate for the 2008 sale.

JANUARY 2007

January 11 -- A REMINDER: Crystal Lakes Volunteer Fire Department personnel often find it necessary to block the road(s) surrounding an incident. This is done for our safety AND YOURS, because a scene may be dangerous and/or unstable, and emergency personnel or vehicles may be in the roadway or enter it suddenly. We understand this can be inconvenient, but please, obey the directions of fire department members and do not enter an area that has been blocked off. We appreciate your assistance in keeping us ALL safe.

January 14 -- The fire department will be burning the Crystal Lakes Association slash pile beginning the morning of January 14th. Department members will watch over the fire for the next 72 hours to make certain it does not have an opportunity to spread. We will be closing Tiny Bob Road around the slash pile for at least the first 12 hours, due to the tremendous heat generated by the fire, which has been known to blister the paint on cars in the roadway. We suggest all travelers plan to take Creedmore Lakes Road all day on the 14th, and preferably until Wednesday afternoon. The slash pile is closed to new materials until further notice (the Association will make an announcement when it is available again). Thank you.

January 26 -- The Fire Board welcomes Sherry Alexander as its fifth member.

OCTOBER 2006

October 25 -- Property owners should be aware that all properties in the 9th and 14th Filings are in the Crystal Lakes Fire Protection District and subject to the Crystal Lakes District ISO rating. Please make sure your insurance agent has a record of the correct Fire District for your property.
